Question for tech's and orders

Nursing Students Technicians

Hi, working in the ER a few night's ago and a patient came through our area of the ED. We're mostly an observation unit once for the most part medically cleared. Patient arrived in the ED 2330 and in our unit at 0030. Patient was excessively drinking and even though had ETOH 5-6 hrs ago breath shouldn't of smelt as it did. Also issue with ketones in Kidneys. Patient explained took insulin medication said hasn't been compliant, but took it earlier. Was walking fine breathing was a bit labored and talking okay.

I mean I can take blood sugars I am allowed in my scope. Had no order for any diabetes medication or a glucose check. Anyways upon checking the patient's sugar was at least 30 to 40 points over 400.

I mean I check patients vitals if they feel dizzy even though the RN doesn't tell me to that way can have something to report back with.

Asking tech's opinions is this wrong and unprofessional of me? Or think it's okay?

Appreciate the feedback.

Did you let the nurse know afterwards? I would have told the nurse before checking his blood sugar then documented it, but telling them after would have been fine as well.

I would've checked with the nurse first. I don't think it was wrong of you but things always run smoother when you're on the same page as the RN. Team work makes the dream work
