Anyone Have 10 hour shifts in their PACU?

Currently that's the system we are using in my PACU. As far as I've seen, a 10-hour-shift system works well, as the shifts generally override one another. This bodes well for my team during the hectic times of the day when the OR's are all pushing their patients out at once. And in terms of the evening when things are slowing down, the night team in most cases send the morning staff home early (though this is solely because our charge nurse turns a blind eye to this ^_^ ).

As far as I've seen, the system works.

We have ten hour shifts in our PACU along with 12's and a few eights. We alternate start times that way we overlap for the busiest flow. Usually 2 start at 7, two start at 8, two start at 9, three start at 10 and two at 11. It works well.

Our hospital is a 24/7 level one trauma center. We have a variety of shifts in our PACU. 8, 10, 12hr and some call shifts. The manager tries to be creative and flexable to accomidate for the OR schedule. We usually have a mid-day rush as the first cases get out. Then we have another rush in the afternoon to deal with the more critically ill patients.
We even have positions available... if you're intrested.

I do 12 hours, 3 days a week. there are 2 of us that do this in our unit the rest do 8 hours, we overlap times.......
usually 2 come in at 8( depending on arrival of 1st case of the day)
the 12 hour person's time varies according to the schedule 8-8, or 9-9, and we have at least 1 sometimes 2 that come in for 9-5, or 10-6, depending on case load.
the 12 hour person overlaps with phase 2 staff and helps get all the discharges of outpt's done,.... again depending on the schedule. call starts at 6pm so if need be we still have a 2nd rn to call if the or is running late/ bad cases/ or multiple rooms after 6pm. we do go down to 1 rn on call after 9pm-7am. we are ~200 beds , and we have 7 pacu rn's with several of the phaseII rn's cross trained to phase I also if we need them to help out. I love the 12's, because with doing call too, I still feel like i get my share of time off

i work 2200-0830 monday-thursday. i'm the only full time night shift pacu rn. there is also a part time rn who works the same hours on tuesday and wednesday. the on call person comes in on monday and thursday (call is from 2300-0730). weekend option covers friday-sunday. we also have 8's, 10's and 12's on day shift. i'm in a large level 1 trauma center in st louis city.
it works well for us.

We have 12hr shifts, with only two eight hour RN, both partime, working 12 to 8. This covers our busy times, and we are actually able to get a lunch, off the unit. We have one RN in at 7a, then 2 at 8a, 2 at 9a, 1 at 10a, and occasionally 1 at 11a. This covers the unit well. At 7p, there are two 12 hr night RN's in. I love the 12hrs, it is hard when your doing two in a row, but I love my days off.....
