Portland Area nursing....where did you apply?

Hello,

This discussion is to bring 2014 Portland area school applicants together and hopefully meet our soon to be classmates. Please share where you have applied this year and a little bit about yourself. I applied to OHSU's ABSN and Linfield's ABSN. I have a previous social service degree, worked in healthcare for three years and now work as a career counselor. I decided to follow my own advice about following my dreams and here I am anxiously waiting to hear back for a decision that will come in what seems like an eternity from now. Nice to meet you!

VonE- I have one term left of general ed. prerequisites. I wanted to wait until they were completed before I applied to elsewhere, so that I would be more competitive! If I am not accepted by WWU, then I will apply to University of Portland and several schools out of state in the coming fall. I wanted a 2-year BSN program, which is what turned me away from OHSU (it is three).

Hellonewyear- hopefully you won't have to reapply next year and you get accepted by WWU. I was looking at the BSN for OHSU, that's weird it takes 3 years...a whole year longer than the other 2 year BSN programs, so I totally get where you are coming from.

Linfield has a Spring cohort you can apply to in August, just in case you see yourself in the need :) but fingers crossed--you don't.

Shawba08- We'll have to keep connected through this forum so we share what will hopefully be success stories! I'd rather be accepted at OHSU ABSN because of the cost, but I would be extremely happy going to Linfield too :) We shall see

VonE, absolutely! Im not applying to OHSU's ABSN but I am applying to Linfields since I actually have a chance as they look primarily at prerequisites, essays and healthcare/volunteer experience. I think the cost at OHSU seems less expensive but from what I've heard, Linfield does offer more scholarship money making the costs more comparable. I work at OHSU and would love to go here, but at the same time I can still work here and complete the ABSN at Linfield which would be ideal because I would start working as a nurse sooner.

It does seem that there are pros and cons at each school...fingers crossed and I find myself in the predicament of having to choose! One can only hope. It seems like a lot of people have favored linfield, and well it doesn't hurt that they finish 3 months earlier. It's going to be nice that you will be able to keep your job, I doubt I will be able to do the same. I'm a supervisor at a worksource Oregon center and we operate M-F 8-5 :(

VonE, I don't know if this is true, however, someone once told me as a nursing student you are "automatically" able to do CNA work and as you know as a CNA you may be able to work a couple of 12's a week if you have time. If I were accepted I'd work a weekend here or there to stay current at OHSU and increase my chances of a job after graduation. I can't agree more about being placed in that predicament of having to choose.

I was thinking about caregiving or even a call center--anything that is open pretty much 24/7. I do have CNA training, I just never became employed as a CNA, but it would make sense that we could at least work as caregivers. Sounds like you have a pretty good plan :) I wish everyone that has the heart set on becoming a nurse could be! 2 more months---the anxiety is killing me! :banghead:

That's a great idea! The key is to find a job that will work around school hours. I work at OHSU, but my clinic is only open during the day. I'm hoping I can find another position here, but nightshift and work one or two shifts a week.

I'm sure the you will be able to find something! There's always a way :)

Thought I would pop in, and see how everyone is holding up. Any news?? I'm still waiting to hear from WWU. Hopefully within the next two weeks I should know. The wait is killer. Some days I forget all about it but everytime I see an empty mailbox my hearts sinks!

Anxiously, waiting..linfield may have sent some or all of their acceptances and letters to applicants as one person in this forum received an acceptance packet for linfield yesterday. Fingers crossed!

I received my acceptance letter to Linfield's Summer ABSN cohort!! Super excited !!:)

Can't wait!!!:nurse:
