Should I apply for OR training program after 6 months experience on med surg?

Hi everyone,

I currently have six months experience as a new grad on a med surg floor at my hospital. This hospital closer to my home is hiring for a perioperative training program starting in March. I have always admired surgery and have come to realize I'm not that crazy about working on a med surg floor. I know I am new and I have read numerous blogs about it getting easier to work on med surg but I just don't know if I'll ever feel passionate about it. I always wish I had more one on one time with my patients rather than just running around all night. Would I burn bridges if I leave my first job after six months to pursue OR? Do you think I would have a better shot at getting an interview having this 6 months med surg under my belt or should I have more? Also, when do I tell my boss about possibly interviewing for this job?

I'd say go for it. Med-Surg is not for everyone. I would never go back to doing Med-Surg ever, at least you have 6 months under your belt now and you know what its like working in the floors now.

A perioperative program in your area is a great opportunity. You must have seen some posts here from new nurses and they don't even have a free perioperative program near their area and they are thinking of paying to get into one.

Don't tell your boss just yet. :)
