How does one start as an OR nurse

Specialties Operating Room

Hi! I am making a reentry in nursing..I realy am interested to be an OR nurse ( never had an experience except during school days). Is it possible that one can be assigned in OR without prior experience. What is it like during the first day to a week to a month in an OR like? Is there something like a time alloted for one to be

familiar with the OR setting?

I understand my inquiries sounds so naive. but I really would appreciate any input you can share with me. Thanks.:)

Hi there,

I see you are living in th Philipines, so it is very hard for us North Americans to give you good advise on you options.

Talk to your school and the hospitals in your area. What kind of courses are available, because you are going to have to take some extra training in this area.

What it will be like the first little while? You are probably going to feel like you know nothing and you will be exhausted at the end of the day. After a while it gets easier however and before you know it you will be able to do a lot of things on your own.

Good luck,

Marijke

Thanks for taking time to reply Marijke. I really aprreciate it. At present Im in the Philippines but will migrating to the US soon with my husband and two kids.

There is so much difference as far as nursing practice is concern from my country to yours..i really do like to start with the OR though...its a dream of mine. I keep myself informed through this site..reading mostly about the experiences of others..and I feel good whenever I get a reply to the topics I post..makes me feel welcome.

Thanks again.

Good luck on your move to the USA. I am sure you will be able to find a hospital in the area you are going to which might be willing to train you as an OR nurse, since there is an ongoing shortage of specialty trained RN's.

Maybe one of the US RN's on this bulletin board will be able to tell you a little bit more. I don't know enough, since I live in Canada.

Marijke:rolleyes:
