Bookwalter retractors

Specialties Operating Room

Ok, sorry if this is spelled incorrectly, but is there any reason a competent general surgeon should need these for a routine appendectomy on a small child? Thanks.

It really shouldn't take hiding it from him to get him to not use it.

Wonder if any of his collegues are aware of him doing it?

You should see what THEY ask for Marie...

Bookwalter for 5yr old appy?? What does the incision site look like...:chair:

Laparoscopic procedure would be nice :nurse:

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.

If that guy's using a Bookwalter for an appy, his laparo appy would have to be frightening.

Usually he tries to do lapros on some people, usually GB surgery. About 4 hours later he opens. (they are ALL open)

He is one of the worst surgeons I have seen, but there are always worse ones.

Having worked as R.N. in O.R for 30+ years thought I'd seen it all....then something else pops up that's beyond belief....they are sent to test us. What would we have to look forward to each day...sans Surgeons!!:blushkiss

We have one that's pretty below par (not to the point of pt. endangerment), but, sheesh, i can't believe your hospital still lets that guy practice.

He asks for them for a 45 pound 5 year old, I swear! He is not new at this, just very unskilled. Nicest guy you would ever meet, just stay off his OR table.

I think the bookwalter would be larger than the whole child!!

And sometimes it is better to fib to docs cos it saves you the hassle of having to listen to them rant and rave when you say they can't have it. Fact is sometimes the OR nurse knows better!

Where did he train as a surgeon?

What are the possible reasons he use the Bookwalter?

Is he planning to do abdominal exploration aside from appendectomy?

Is this his security blanket in doing abdominal surgeries?

Does he need to update his surgical technique?

I'm sure we all could think of many theories as to the why of this surgeon's peculiar desire for a bookwalter...however, there is at least one other possibility...we have a surgeon who asks for "xxxxx" to ALWAYS be in the room. If he walks in and sees it missing...he begins to put on a show...sometimes it can be as simple as an excuse to go on a tirade...who knows?
