Number of saline flush per patient?

Dear all,

Can you tell me how many prefilled syringe of saline flush do you use per patient per year?

When do you use it? Is the usage different for each venous access?

Thanks for your help,

Best regards,

NS prefills are used on all different types of VADs (Venous Access Devices). The amount and frequency will vary based upon the type of VAD you are flushing and for what reason you are flushing it. For example. a common flush you will see on a saline loc is a 2-3 ml of NS every 12 hrs and prn (esp before after IV medication), For a Central line or PICC you may see a 10 ml NS flush every 12 hrs and prn. We often will double the flush after a blood draw or if we see blood in the line. . The per yr usage is a bit difficult to answer b/c we rarely have patients for a year and that will vary based upon the the type of VAD or VADs the pt has in place and the IV medications and blood draws taken from a CVC and if the VAD is locked there will be more flushes used. Why are you asking?
