Published

I would just like to say hello and introduce myself. My name is Laurie and I graduated from nursing school December of 2001. I have been working part-time in a burn unit but have just been hired full-time on an Oncology Unit. I am excited but scared! I am eager to learn all I can.

Thanks for your time

Awesome. I worked hem/onc/bmt and it was a great experience. Do you do BMT?

To be completly honest I am not sure what is done there. I know that the Regional Cancer Center is right beside our hospital so my guess is yes. They are going to give me 7 days training, 5 days and 2 nights all 12 hr shifts and that is it. I am a little nervous cause after that I am supposed to know what I am doing and I read in other posts that it was a while before new nurses could hang chemo solutions.

Yes I have never seen a hospital have nurses do chemo without the classes? That is odd. Might want to call and ask them as it is so important to know how to do body surface area for dosing and such and know the side effects and things like certain chemos turn urine other colors and such so you can warn the patient or it scares the beejebers out of them.

I have been working in a chemo day centre for about 7 months now and I was new to oncology nursing, my advice is dont do anything that you arent completely confident with but also dont be too nervous when you give your first chemo because before you know it it will be like second nature
