OU Accelerated BSN May 2011 Start

U.S.A. Oklahoma

Published

So, is anyone else in this awful waiting period hoping to hear about acceptance from OU? I applied to the Tulsa campus, but I know admission decisions for the Tulsa and OKC campus were made at the same time, so I figured between the ~400 of us maybe some others read this board.

We all got the e-mail saying acceptance decision letters would be starting to arrive Feb. 14th...of course, that was before the snow those first two weeks of Feb. Has anyone heard how long they might be delayed now? I sent an e-mail to the ABSN Student Program Coordinator on Monday (the 14th) asking that question, but did not receive a response. I don't want to call and be a bother, but I'm so anxious (you'd think I would have been able to relax by now since I put my application in in frickin' September, but these few days have been killing me)! Maybe someone else has asked this question or called and gotten a response?

If nothing else, I would love to meet some other applicants (especially to the Tulsa campus) that read AllNurses! If anyone else is out there...what's your previous degree in? Why nursing now? Any health care experience? Did you apply anywhere else? Let's be friends and try to find ways to make time go by faster! :)

Also, when she says, "During the summer you are in class for the first half (4 weeks) almost everyday," she means Monday- Friday.

Woohoo, so glad you'll be joining us! That is exactly the thought process I went through - weighing the benefits of the program against the expense.

Thanks for sharing more of your friends' experience, it's good to have some idea of what to expect, and I'm sure we'll learn more at orientation!

I'll share on here tomorrow what I find out from financial aid.

Okay, here's what financial aid had to say:

Summer 2011 - fill out your FAFSA for 2011-2012. The loans/grants you qualify for will begin being applied in Summer 2011. The woman I spoke with said since OU HSC has so many programs that begin in summer that their academic year technically begins and ends in summer each year. No extra paperwork necessary.

FAFSA stuff - She said they download everyone's FAFSA applications for each term at the same time, and since they're still finishing up Spring, they won't even download our FAFSAs until April. She said in mid-April we will each get a letter that will either request more information or will detail the awards we are being offered.

Not gonna work during the program - She said if your FAFSA for 2011-2012 reflects a significant estimated family contribution due to a job you worked last year/part of this year but that you're going to have to quit in order to attend the program, she said you call them or come in person after you get your award notice to discuss this sort of thing on a case-by-case basis. She said we might qualify for additional loans if our income is going to be dramatically different than what we claimed on our 2010 taxes.

She said scholarships ( http://nursing.ouhsc.edu/Current_Students/scholarships_awards.htm ) and the online scholarship application will be up sometime in April.

Hope this helps!

Just got my letter, and I was completely rejected. I called and they said I was rejected because I am finishing Statistics and Chemistry, and also because I was an out of state resident. Kind of shocked I was rejected because my GPA is 3.4 for Science and 3.7 for the other pre pre-req's. I'm pretty disappointed because I'm currently en route to Oklahoma. I also applied for the traditional two year program which starts in August so we'll see what happens there. If I don't get in to that one I'll work as a CNA, take a few more classes, and re-apply for next year.

Hope the other out of state people get better news than I did! Best of luck to everyone who will be starting the program soon!

:( I'm so sorry to hear that! I wouldn't think being from out of state would be such a negative!! I do know when I went in the first time to get information (like 3 years ago...LOL...it's been a long journey) they strongly recommended that I not even apply until all my prereqs were done and grades were in.

I hope your application to the traditional program goes much better - by then you'll have your grades finalized for chem and stats, right?

I also thought that being out of state wouldn't be a point against me. OU determines admittance by a points system, and OK residents get an extra point. I completely understand the pre-req's not being finished. I knew I was chancing it with those. It's been a long road for me as well, and I wish I hadn't wasted last Spring with the nursing program in Florida. Oh well--we'll see what the traditional BSN says--thankfully ALL of the pre-req's will be completed before they make the final decisions. By then I'll be an OK resident, and unless I fall off the wagon I should be getting an "A" in stats and chem.

I got my letter today also. I was waitlisted so who knows what will happen. I guess the waiting game continues. Anyways, I currently have one more application out at another school so I will keep my fingers crossed.

Juliaann - Thanks a bunch for that info!!! It's definitely a weight lifted knowing that only one Fafsa needs to be filled out.

No problem! I just can't wait to get more information...I've already spent waaay too much time online looking at white shoes and stethoscopes and planners and a new bookbag...haha, I have an excitement problem.

There's a lot of information up under the Current Students -> Orientation link, but since it's all from last year I'm not counting on it being applicable to us...just trying to get some ideas! I wish the 2011 booklist was up!

Sadly, I too was denied. I was told that it was because I had one class in progress and that I'm not a resident :( oh well, no tornadoes or snow storm adventures for me. Good luck with nursing school! And big thanks to juiliaann for all the support and posts

I'm so sorry!! :( I can't believe residency is having this big of an impact...I would think they would want to diversify to an extent and bring smart young people to Oklahoma in order to try and retain some Oklahoma-trained nurses for our facilities here...especially our VA and Indian Clinics that need good nurses (one of the few areas in the country that does!!)

Best of luck to you, newRNstudent02! I hope an awesome program comes your way soon. :)

I'm a current ABSN. If you have any questions (like "Which shoes?" or "Which stethoscope?" or "Is it true everything is a gigantic chaotic mess?") I'd be happy to answer. Any of the current ABSNs would, in fact.

By the way, the answers to the three questions are:

1) Who cares which shoes you wear... just make sure they're almost all white

2) The stethoscope depends on where you intend to work once you're done

3) Yes, OU is a gigantic chaotic mess.
