Thanks for your comment, Amy. I'm a little paranoid, though, because even though I know I have a great GPA, I actually didn't get in to Tulsa Community College's ADN program when I applied last fall. :( I know it was because I was still in the middle of taking micro and anatomy, so those grades weren't final yet, and that hurt me because enough other applicants had all the pre-reqs done, but I'm still worried that with the sudden flood of students trying to enter nursing, even a good GPA isn't enough. But I know it was a timing issue with TCC, I shouldn't have applied that early in my pre-reqs, but I see it as a blessing in disguise because it's allowed me to think about what I *really* want, which is a BSN and the education and career opportunities that come with it - not just the quickest and cheapest route to an RN. I'm holding out for OU's ABSN now, and I'm so hopeful! I just want to make sure I get in the first time, and don't have to go through what I did with being rejected from TCC again. :)

You make a good point about the pharmacology and dosage - I don't have the money, but I do have the time. I'll have 2 semesters off before I would start the ABSN (if I were to get accepted)....I don't know what I'd do with 2 semesters off!! I'd definitely want to do something to be getting more prepared for nursing school and stimulate my mind. I suppose I could just get some books and do some independent study. Much cheaper. :)

I have my BS degree in biology and a minor in psych so I really didn't need any other prereq's besides nutrition. I would recommend taking some filler classes just to let them know that you are serious about the program after you are done with prereq's. I would contact the program and ask them if there is anything in your area. I think the pharm class is a great idea, I cannot see how it would hurt anything besides the pocket book. Your previous experience is a bonus if you ask me; I worked as a medical assistant previously. Your GPA sounds good, a little higher than mine in fact. Volunteer at the hospital where they do clinicals (if you're applying to Tulsa, I think it is called Bedlam clinic), you never know if you will meet someone on the board. :) Oh and don't worry about the Chem class, my first year of college a made a D in Animal Bio (the first grade that shows on my transcript!), I re-took it and made a B. They really look at your last few semesters as a full-time student and prereq's. That's when you learn to study and become a serious student. I wish you well!

Got my acceptance letter today!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write out your comment estursa!! I will definitely talk to the Nursing Program advisor here in Tulsa before I submit my application and make plans for what to do with the 2 semester between finishing my pre-reqs and hopefully starting the program. Volunteering is an excellent suggestion, thank you!

And I love love love my job and all the experience I get. I get to be at every code blue, every rapid response, and spend time in the cath lab, as well as routine tests and EKGs on the med/surg floors. I make the nurses show me all sorts of stuff and answer all my questions. :)

Are any of you planning to work/are working through the program? I'm not planning on it, since everything I've read and heard suggests it's not a good idea, and I really want to be able to devote myself to doing well in the program. And my current job doesn't offer any part time or PRN work. :( It'll be hard financially, but I guess that's why loans exist.

KISMET831:

Yay! So exciting, right? Which location?

Estursa: I'll be at the OKC campus. You?

Me too, it looks like we will be fellow classmates. :) I would say to PM me because that is what people always say on here, but I don't know what that means or how to do it! HA

It has been a good experience. Get ready for a lot of work, but it will all be worth it in the end. I will tell you now that the instructors in the accelerated program are great; very supportive. It is a crazy schedule to keep up with, but it helps the program to go faster. You will have to definitely post if you make it in and I will probably be at the open house orientation. I would love to welcome you to the program. Good luck!!!

Nolimitam:

I got in and I am looking forward to seeing you at orientation. I see that Tulsa has their orientation listed as April 21! So early! I hope OKC doesn't do the same, I don't really want to leave Germany before May 1. So, talk to me about text books, what do you recommend? I saw that they will be selling a package and that you can also purchase separately. I of course want to save money where I can, but I don't want to give myself a headache while I am at it. Do most people keep books, sell them to the next year if they are being used, or what? What do you think you have spent on books so far? I know we just traded around with friends when I did my bachelors, but what is the best for this program. Also, any other advice?

I got my letter and I am listed as an alternate. I know it is because I am taking microbiology right now. Has anyone else been an alternate? I wonder how that works. I am still waiting to hear from another program though. I think that since it is only an ADN I should get in if OU listed me as an alternate? :) They didn't tell me where I am on the alternate list. How many alternates do they take?

Anyways, I am surprisingly optimistic. I honestly expected to straight up be denied from OU because I am currently taking one of the courses and my science grades are barely better than average. My overall GPA is very high but I knew that wasn't a guarantee! So...congrats to you girls who got in! Maybe I will see you guys in June!

If anyone has ever been an alternate or knows more about their process please post! Thanks!

AMY: Did you decide not to do the UCO program? It is a really good one too, my dad is an RN and he said that the students who come from that program are generally very knowledgeable. I also have some friends there who really like it. As for OU, I am not sure how many alternates they take for this program. They can give you more information. When you email them you can ask them how many they take, where you are on the list, how far they usually make it down the list and if there were any notes made about why you are listed as an alternate. This could help you improve your status for next year if you try to apply again. I was listed as an alternate for the PA program in Jan 09. They took 20 alternates and made it through 14 of them by the time school started. They told me to be ready with all of the items on the check list completed because you could receive a call to start up until the first or second week of school. So, I was ready to go until late August when I moved to Germany. I hope this information is helpful to you. Good Luck!

I turned UCO down after the 2nd week of the program. I hated it. I agree that it is a great program but for me it was agonizing to know that I could do an accelerated program instead of the 2 1/2 years they require! Also, since it is designed for first time bachelor students, I felt like there was a lot of unnecessary "busy work" trying to teach these sophomores how to study and prepare themselves for nursing school. I already know how to study since I already had a bachelors. But yes, the program itself seemed like it would be very beneficial and the instructors are wonderful! My main issue was time! I rather have no life for 10-14 months (BADNAP or ABSN) than kind of no life for 2 1/2 years.

I need to call OU to check to see why I was listed as an alternate. I am pretty sure it is because I am currently taking Micro. The microbiology I originally took at Rose State didn't transfer. I had everything else completed though. Honestly, I am still waiting to hear from another program, so this all might work out fine for me. I hate waiting though! :(
