CSCC online track admissions

U.S.A. Ohio

Hey all...I've been searching the forum but can't find a direct answer. For those of you in the online track at Columbus State Community College or those who have recently applied for the online track at CSCC...

Is it true that admission is based on your application time instead of your bachelor's degree GPA, CSCC GPA, HESI score, essay, etc?

For those of you who have been admitted to the online track, do you mind sharing your first degree GPA, CSCC GPA, HESI score and confirmation # of your application when you applied (and maybe what time you applied)?

Thanks! I'm in my last quarter of pre-reqs and getting ready to apply for the spring 2011 cohort. I thought I'd be a shoo-in for this program but now after reading some other posts I'm not so sure. Have an appt. with an adviser in 2 weeks but I hear the general advisers aren't very helpful when asking nursing specific questions.

Thanks again!

Can I apply to the traditional program in July and if I can't start soon enough also apply to the online track in the fall? Am I allowed to do that?

Yes, but once you accept a seat in one of the programs it will take you out of the running for the other. I applied to both. If I get accepted to the online I am going to take it. If it doesn't work for me I can always switch to the traditional but I doubt that will happen because I really like the hybrid classes. I avoid in class lecture classes if I can. I have 343 credits on my transcript so I think I know how to study. By the way, I didn't like my undergraduate major either so I have a "D", a few "F's" and "C's" on my transcript but that was before I knew how to be a good student. We all make mistakes when we are young. Go for it.

Well, I was accepted with my first application. My NET was 98%, I had a 4.0, several years of experience, a BA in International Studies (West African Political Economy), and had completely finished all classes except for my NURS classes, I think I was number nine.

Hang in there, I know the application process can be very frustrating, but once you're in it will be totally worth it.

Well the application period for the traditional is before the online. I would probably be accepted to the traditional program before the application period for the online program opened up, so how would that work?

Is the 343 credit hours semester or quarter hours? I have 255 quarter hours (170 semester) and I thought I had a lot!! WOW!!

How much did you have to study to get a 98% on the NET? I'm worried about the anatomy, physiology, biology, and chemistry portions. It has been almost 4 years since I took chemistry or biology, 2 years since anatomy, and I have never taken physiology.

I applied both online and traditional, but when I got accepted online it canceled my traditional application. The online track is workable for those working full time, although I know some in the traditional track that are working full time as well.

And as for hours, my plan of course work dated 6/06 lists 51 hours of arts and sciences, 54 hours of nursing coursework and 2 hours of electives your clinical hours which range from 4-16 hours each week, and these are the numbers for quarters, although I know they're switching to semesters maybe in 2012?

And as for the NET, I thought it was really basic. I bought the study guide and really I just brushed up on my math, I had totally forgotten how to divide fractions for example.

I have to take the Hesi A2 which I'm super nervous about. I'm taking it on Wednesday for Tri-C. I have to take all the sections, but they only count the math, reading, grammar, and vocab. I'm hoping taking the biology, chem, and A&P sections will help me figure out weaknesses to prepare to take it for a grade at CSCC. I'm not worried about the parts at Tri-C. First thing I did when I got the guide was take the practice tests with no preparation and I got a 96%.

So, if I apply to the traditional program in July and the online program in September, won't my traditional program acceptance cancel out my online program application? How do I get around that?

My job I have is full time nights and that is hard to work with required classes most days of the week. I also hate going to lecture and the traditional program would drive me nuts... but it is better than nothing!

I read on the CSCC website that "the HESI score reflects a necessary reading, science, and math knowledge foundation to be successful in the Nursing Program." It doesn't sound like that would include anatomy and physiology. For those of you who have taken it at CSCC, is that accurate?

Oh gosh, a 98% on the net and a 4.0. I got an 83% on the net and had a 3.29 for my undergrad so now I feel kind of crappy about my score and grade. I wish I would have found a major I really liked so I had a better GPA. I got accepted to law school a few years back so I hope I will get accepted to the online program. I did not like law school at all because it kind of was similar to my undergrad of staring at a computer screen all day except it was staring at case books. I am beginning to feel like nursing admissions is more competitive than law school admissions. I guess I can wait to start in the traditional program if I don't get in. :(

Foreverlaura, I don't know how that would work. I applied to the online program before the traditional. You could always start in the traditional program and switch over. They say on the website that you can't do that but people in the orientation say you can do it. I am just worried if they deny me to both programs then I will have to take the A2 in order to apply again. I don't know if they still count the NET or not, they don't say anything on the website about that. I think it would be kind of unfair that we had to pay for the NET and then we would have to take the A2 if we don't get in the first time.

Forever Laura, I think the 343 credits is quarter hours. I have a multimedia degree from columbus state but could never find a job in that field, a computer science degree from Devry and a paralegal certificate from columbus state. I also went to Capital University for my MBA for a while but I didn't send the transcript to columbus state so I have more credit hours out there. I guess it just took me awhile to figure out what I wanted to do when I grew up. I always wanted to apply to the nursing program at cscc but I was always scared of chemistry and biology when I was younger. I was really bad at science in high school so I don't know what happened. I actually didn't think the chemistry and biology I took at columbus state was hard.

Agreed. I'm taking Chem 113 now and haven't had a general chem course since 2002, but I find this course more pleasant than expected. Still, it worries me that the influx of 2nd career students are going to get the online track spots with degrees that are 10-20 years old. Not that they don't deserve it. I totally get that the economy sucks and nursing is stable. I just want to know if my 3.4 OSU GPA and 4.0 CSCC GPA will make the cut. Otherwise I need to possibly start looking elsewhere.

Again, any students in the online track at CSCC or recently accepted want to share their GPAs and/or NET/HESI scores with us? We'd like to know if we have a fighting chance. Thanks!

I agree it would be unfair, but I doubt the school really cares. They seem like they are in the business for themselves, not the students.

That's cool that they let you switch over. Hopefully I can do that.

My boyfriend is getting transferred and they asked him to rank his preferences. He ranked a different store in Columbus as #1 and a store in Broadview Heights (Cleveland) #2. I guess I'll be going to whatever school he ends up getting placed at!

I love that CSCC lets you do an elective clinical. I'd probably do critical care or trauma as those are my interest areas. But I think it is beyond stupid that you spend your first clinical in a nursing home when you have to prove you are proficient in basic nurse aide skills before starting. Seems to me there is nothing you would learn there as you'd just be passing meds and doing nurse aide duties - why not do that on a med/surg floor? Tri-C doesn't make you do any nurse aide training before starting and all your clinicals are hospital based, but you don't get any electives...

I wonder if CSCC would let you do a second or third elective if it fit with your schedule and didn't interfere with anything? Like 5th, 6th, and 7th quarters I'll only have one nursing class for 6 or 8 credit hours - I'd love to add in another elective to expand and increase my knowledge. The electives are only 2-3 credit hours... I have to be full time during the program anyway (health insurance) so I would rather add in more nursing knowledge than random crap classes that won't get me anywhere!! Anyone know if they let you do that?

In addition to having all the sciences done by that point, I'll have all my general ed done from my previous degree (psychology) plus I have taken sociology, anthropology, healthcare ethics, a separate pharmacology class, medical terminology, and nutrition.

Looks like they require the A&P sections...
