Help!... OSUMC RN Internship/Residency Graduates
Thanks, that is reassuring to hear. Like you, I already have experience as a PCA and have a previous bachelor's degree in another field. Plus my instructor at CSCC is helping me get a job at OSU now as a PCA so I hope that will earn me some brownie points when I graduate and apply for a nursing job there. It just seems like such a great place to work...such varied patient cases, learning opportunities, excellent pay and benefits...I can't wait until I get to the point that you are now! Thanks again for the info!

Help!... OSUMC RN Internship/Residency Graduates
For those of you who applied to the OSU internship programs and got a job...do you have ADN degrees or BSN degrees? Do you know if your newly hired coworkers have ADNs or BSNs? I'm concerned about graduating from a 2 year school and not being able to find a job at a good hospital in Columbus when I graduate. Thanks!

CSCC December Online Applicants
Guess I'm not the only night owl here! Thanks so much for the info. Although I'm naturally still worried about the application, I feel much better after having heard your story. I have a similar circumstance. 3.3 previous GPA, expect to have about 3.7 GPA at CSCC at time of application and plan on studying my butt off for the HESI. Thanks for the input, I'm already feeling more at ease! Holly

CSCC December Online Applicants
msteeleart, Would you mind sharing some of your grades and test scores with us? I plan on applying this fall for the spring 2011 class and I'm just wondering if I have what it takes to get in. Would you mind telling me... cumulative GPA? (previous colleges and at CSCC/pre-reqs) HESI score (or did you take NET)? do you think your application number (time submitted) made a difference? Thanks in advance if you're willing to share! Holly

CSCC online track admissions
Agreed. I'm taking Chem 113 now and haven't had a general chem course since 2002, but I find this course more pleasant than expected. Still, it worries me that the influx of 2nd career students are going to get the online track spots with degrees that are 10-20 years old. Not that they don't deserve it. I totally get that the economy sucks and nursing is stable. I just want to know if my 3.4 OSU GPA and 4.0 CSCC GPA will make the cut. Otherwise I need to possibly start looking elsewhere. Again, any students in the online track at CSCC or recently accepted want to share their GPAs and/or NET/HESI scores with us? We'd like to know if we have a fighting chance. Thanks!

CSCC online track admissions
I read on the CSCC website that "the HESI score reflects a necessary reading, science, and math knowledge foundation to be successful in the Nursing Program." It doesn't sound like that would include anatomy and physiology. For those of you who have taken it at CSCC, is that accurate?

Anyone else in the online track at CSCC have any insight about the admission process?

I'm curious...if you already work at Mt. Carmel and can take advantage of those tuition benefits, then why not just go to school there? Isn't the accelerated 2nd degree program only 13 months there?

CSCC online track admissions
Thanks for the great responses! Unfortunately I am not willing to move Cleveland. Not a big fan of that city and my fiancee will be starting classes at OSU in the fall anyway. I love and miss Columbus and that's where I want to be. Can't wait to move back. I wonder why CSCC won't offer stats on their admission rates, admitted students stats, etc like most other schools do. If I had an idea of where I needed to be academically and decided it was way out of my league, at least I could start looking elsewhere, even if that meant a private school that's way more expensive like Mt. Carmel. Unfortunately I have to keep a full-time job throughout school because I need the insurance for a medical condition. So any type of accelerated program also won't work. Seems like my options are dwindling if I don't get in to CSCC's online track as planned... By the way...I wished you did work at CSCC and were my adviser! At least I might get a qualified and honest answer!

CSCC online track admissions
By the way, I can't remember who, but I know another poster in another thread mentioned that CSCC told her any qualified student will get accepted to the online track on a first-come, first-served basis. Are you sure your friend didn't submit the online app at like 9:23 instead of 9:04 because of a bogged-down slow internet connection? ...because its possible that the timing could make a difference, although its a crappy way of deciding admission.

CSCC online track admissions
I agree about the advisers! I spent 1 semester at UT, 1 year at OSU-Lima and the remainder at OSU in Columbus for my first degree. Never did I have such a problem with advisers! When I called during the 4th week of autumn quarter at CSCC just to get an advising appt with a half-brained general adviser (since we can't see nursing advisers yet), they told me there wouldn't be any more appointments until winter qtr! What! I live 2 hours from Columbus and am mostly doing online classes with a once-a-week trip to campus until I move to Cbus in the spring. That makes walk-in appts out of the question with no time between my classes on my one long day in Columbus. Why don't they have at least one or more advisers that are specifically for pre-nursing...especially since there are literally hundreds of students applying to the nursing program each application period? Anyway, thanks for the input. This makes me very nervous. I graduated with a 3.3 GPA from OSU in '05 and so far have a 4.0 at CSCC, but haven't taken the HESI yet. Arrgh...didn't realize I'd have such competition!

CSCC online track admissions
Hey all...I've been searching the forum but can't find a direct answer. For those of you in the online track at Columbus State Community College or those who have recently applied for the online track at CSCC... Is it true that admission is based on your application time instead of your bachelor's degree GPA, CSCC GPA, HESI score, essay, etc? For those of you who have been admitted to the online track, do you mind sharing your first degree GPA, CSCC GPA, HESI score and confirmation # of your application when you applied (and maybe what time you applied)? Thanks! I'm in my last quarter of pre-reqs and getting ready to apply for the spring 2011 cohort. I thought I'd be a shoo-in for this program but now after reading some other posts I'm not so sure. Have an appt. with an adviser in 2 weeks but I hear the general advisers aren't very helpful when asking nursing specific questions. Thanks again!

Did I cause my patient to die faster?
Wow, thank you ALL so much for the kind words and reassurance. After reading a few replies yesterday after I posted, I finally broke down and cried because I felt like I never had a chance to deal with my emotions about my first pt death until then. Knowing that I didn't accidentally cause her death was a huge weight off my shoulders and I am feeling much better about everything now. I have been working at the hospital for almost a year and have seen and experienced a lot, but I am only just starting my nursing pre-reqs (career change...so excited!). So honestly, when she told me that, I really didn't know any better and actually believed her. Although now I feel I should probably always take her comments with a grain of salt. This was coming from a nurse who last week told me (and btw I am a type 1 diabetic) that I needed to take a diet soda away from a new onset type 2 diabetic pt who was still running high numbers because it will raise his sugar even more. Even when I tried to correct her and explain that there are no sugar or carbs in diet soda (which is one of the very few 'freebies' in life for diabetics), she insisted that I still take it away because it "must be something in the coloring or how its made, but don't let it fool you, it will still raise your glucose, I see it all the time." True, the nurses that I work with have waaaaay more experience and knowledge than me in the nursing field. But when it comes to diabetes, I'm the expert. So what kind of nonsense was that? Anyway, per several of your suggestions, I will be talking to my supervisor about this. Not so much because I am personally upset...I can let that go. But because it seems she continually tells CNAs and patients things that simply aren't true, and that can't be good for anyone's physical or emotional health. Whether she's on a power trip or just that ignorant (my guess is it's a combination of both), I need to speak up so she doesn't subject anyone to further false information. Thanks again for all of your support, it is truly appreciated.

Did I cause my patient to die faster?
I am a CNA on a medical/surgical floor and am in dire need of clarification (from a nurse please) of what just happened at work last night. I work nights, came on the floor and got to work right away. I got a walking report from the 2nd shift CNA. One pt was an unresponsive very elderly woman who had suffered an acute MI several days earlier and wasn't expected to make it through the night. I was told in report by the CNA that the pt was being turned side to side every 2 hours (with oral care, checking for incontinence, etc.) and she was due again at 11:30, so I had him help me change her and turn her before he left. She passed less than an hour later. Here's where I need some help... One of the nurses told me (not even the patient's nurse) that it was our fault the patient passed when she did. She didn't do it in an accusatory or mean way...just in a very matter-of-fact (and a little condescending) way. Like: "by the way, you shouldn't have turned her, that's why she passed so soon." I've been at this hospital for 9 months and somehow I have managed to skate by without any patient deaths...so this was my first. Needless to say I was speechless and felt terrible, as if I had taken her away from her family sooner than she was supposed to go. She then gave me some explanation that I didn't understand. Something about when turning the patient, the blood floods the heart and the patient will pass soon after. First of all, we had to turn her to get her cleaned up. Second, I was told she was being turned every 2 hours all through 2nd shift. So did I really do something wrong? Is there truth to what she said? And if so, can someone give me a better explanation of what happened? Thanks in advance...feeling confused and guilty here.

Issues placing a bedpan
I realize this post is a little old, but for anyone coming across it looking for advice, here's another tip. When using the rolling technique to get the pt on the bedpan, always roll the pt away from you, then roll back onto the pan. Then go to the opposite side of the bed and pull up a bit on the draw sheet. The pt is sometimes not fully on the pan and when you pull up from the opposite side it helps to get them centered. Works like a charm!
