i am the person on our unit who always "feels" when a pt is going to come in. this drives everyone nuts, but it has happened often enough so they know when to listen. i can't fine tune the sense, but every so often i will just suggest they need to set a table because we are going to get a pt or two. it rarely fails. i am usually right, however, i can't seem to fine tune that sixth sense to include the lottery or any other facet of my life, although my husband will start to say something and i will get a flash of what he was going to say and repeat it exactly to him. it freaks us both out. even the doctors have learned to l"listen: to my sixth sense. i simply can't explain it. are any of you known for that sort of sixth sense, or know someone you work with who is? i can't be the only "witch" out there.....:)
It's me, I am also the witch. I can tell when a pt's going to come, I get a "feeling" when we are going to precip. One day at shift change, there were no patients on the unit and I told everyone that I knew that someone was going to come in and precip. and lo and behold, 3 hours later it happened. I can also tell how far someone is dilated as soon as they walk up to the desk, I can also almost always guess who their doctor is.
I do have a problem with being called the "witch" though, I would prefer "psycic".
I am not the resident "witch" (or "psychic" or whatever), but what I am is the (as my friend calls me) "Doofus Magnet". We can have NO weird-o's, nutballs, sundowners or goofs at ALL on the floor. However, just have *ME* working, especially as Charge, and they ALL come pouring in! It's like radar!! (I can see it now....Junior Hambone is driving his '78 Chevy pickup down the road, happily contemplating his trip to the local Bob Evans for the Heart-attack-on-a-plate special, and all of a sudden....."bleep -- bleep - bleep!" He is pulled in to the ER drive thro NO POWER OF HIS OWN....He walks into the Registration area like an automaton..."Must be admitted to 2-South...must be admitted to 2-South" are all the words he can whisper to the clerk, the MD and the RN's at work. "Yep! Get him upstairs right now! Deb must be working! They are coming in like a horde of invading killer bees!" Sure enough, they all look outside and the parking lot is filled with pick-ups, handicapped signs, and ambulances just arriving with loads of bi-polars, Alzheimers, and folks who are in the midst of hypoglycemic-hypokalemic hallucinations.)
Hee hee....sadly, it is too true!

I am rarely wrong either. Other night we had a delivery and I set up the c/s room " just in case." Everyone giving me the rolling eyes....Two hours later, 32 week abruption comes in and has a stat section under general with the OR not yet there to open the case cart...I don't mind being mistaken, but that hardly ever happens. Better to err on the side of caution I always say.......
