saline injections for labor pain relief??

Is anyone out there using saline injections into the back for pain relief in labor?? Our director wants to investigate the policies for doing this at our institution and we know very little about it. If anyone can let me know how it is done, by whom, how often and the expected relief, I would greatly appreciate it.

The majority of patients get labor epidurals but we have one physician that refuses to use a particular anesthesiologist and this would be a possible option when anest isn't available and instead of using Stadol and Nubain.

Thanks for any input. SHaron

I happened to save the link below when this subject came up before.

I hope these help.

Thanks for the info. Have you ever used it before???

Specializes in ER.

I've used them several times and they are very effective if you get a good weal. It took a few patients before I was able to get a good pain control result and not have a horrible stinging at the site of the injection. Once it's over though, their back pain is almost completely gone.

Saline doesn't sting as much but sterile water effects last longer. Even with water you must reinject about every hour.

LOL, my L&D/PP experience is limited to school and my own or family's births. I like my babies after they are born and are officially pediatric patients.
