Specializes in ICU, L&D.

I am moving to Chicago in August and am very interested in the WHNP/CNM program at UIC for next fall. I have two years of VICU, SICU, Neuro ICU, and CICU. I have been trying to get into L&D or Women's Health but NO ONE will hire me without L&D experience! What do you think about getting into the program with no prior experience? Does anyone know any hospitals in Chicago that hire for L&D without prior L&D exp? I am a member of AWHONN and going to the conference in June. I am so passionate about women's health but am nervous about my future with no experience in women's health first. Please help!

Specializes in Nursing Education.

I would try to get a job in Mother/Baby or the NBN. It would be easier to get L&D experience if you make it known to the right people once your foot is in the door. Surely someone would hire you into postpartum or something with all your ICU experience? Being a NP in Women's Health is a wonderful opportunity to pursue, I would definitely be inclined to get some experience though before I invested the time in an advanced degree. Good luck!

Thanks! I love the fast paced environment of L&D, which is why I liked ICU as a second option. However, you're right...maybe if thats the only way I can get my foot in the door, I'll settle!

Try your small rural hospitals. You may have better luck getting your foot in the door!
