PIH cart...need any resources

Hi all!

I am part of a group at work putting together an exciting project.

Currently, when someone comes in for PIH we have a small hand held tray that we carry into the room with us (with just basically a reflex hammer, IV tubing and start kit). We are developing a cart that we bring in the room with us so that we never have to leave the patients side...complete with admission paperwork and c/section prep stuff just in case. We've developed cards to laminate on the top with some of our most common BP meds including route, administration, side effects, action, etc....and another card with magnesium sulfate basics. The cart will follow the patient to postpartum after delivery.

Our manager would also like us to develop what she calls a carepath. I thought it was like a care plan addressing each problem or potential problem that the patient may have. But she says it's more like a step-by-step of how we treat the patient from the moment she arrives on the unit until discharge. It seems like such daughnting task.

Any suggestions of where I might start???? I've done a google search but haven't really found anything exciting.

We have a "PIH bucket" that we use, similar to your cart idea. It's been ahwile since I've checked out the contents (I just jinxed myself, didn't I?) but I know we keep our Mag policy in there, laminated drug cards, labetelol, premixed mag, reflex hammer, extra syringes & IV supplies. Our bucket is a very fancy tackle box with all sorts of little compartments, it's actually just perfect for the job. There's a few other thiings in there too I believe.

In school, our textbooks called it a "critical pathway" if you want to Google that term.

Its a multidisciplinary map of what should be done on what day, etc. We used them most with post-op and psych pts.
