I have read a lot of posts on this board about med-surg experience and getting into labor and delivery. Does anyone have a research article about the difference between nurses who have med-surg ecperience before labor and those who don't. I hear a lot of antecdotal evidence but no hard facts. Any ideas????

I think this will be my doctoral dissertation. There don't seem to be any studies.

This sounds like an interesting topic.. I would like to see if there is research regarding it, since I don't favor med surg. The only actual research I would think is out there are probably surveys or interviews. But it would be hard to compare, since all units and schools are different. To browse, I would log on to my school library's website, and access the research and journal articles databases. My school has a pretty extensive one that is jointed with the San Jose City Library. Here I find many articles, and hey, you never know what info you may find. I personally have asked nurses about if they thought it was necessary to start off in med surg, and they all said no. Go for what you want; why be unhappy for a year if you know you don't like it? I live in a big city, so I have a lot to choose from. In some areas I know nurses are limited in where they work. But if you have choices, take the one that makes you happy! Good Luck!
