Can anyone help me figure out what this paper is asking for? We were told to look for a specific case study-I chose a case study on MRSA in a surgical patient, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to set this up. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. These are the guidelines given to us. I need to do really well on this as it is 10% of our final grade. I know the APA guidelines, but the subject matter is what is confusing.

Paper Guidelines:

Purpose:

1. To introduce the nursing student to the use of medical-related electronic databases as a tool for locating best practice standards

2. To research and evaluate published research evidence

3. To value the correlation between valid research findings and improved patient outcomes

Notes:

1. This paper actually focuses on "research utilization" which is a forerunner to EBP 2. There is a specific series of steps/events in EBP:

Step 1. Define and ask the specific clinical question based on the patient population, the intervention of interest, comparison interventions, and outcome.

Step 2. Collect the best evidence by identifying, appraising, and synthesizing studies to answer the specific clinical question.

Step 3. Critically evaluate the evidence for validity and whether benefits outweigh risks for patient care

Step 4. Integrate the evidence with the provider's clinical expertise, the health-care status and preferences of the patient and the health-care resources available in making a clinical practice decision.

Step 5. Evaluate the practice decision

1. Select a topic from the attached list. As the topics are "broad" you may "narrow" your topic as necessary. Focus on nursing and the peri-operative patient.

3. Summarize your findings in the form of a recommendation for modifying standards of practice with the goal of improving patient outcomes.

4. Cite references using APA format.

Hi Shayboo; I don't know if it is too late to respond, but here is my suggestion: The main deal for a research paper is to find reliable sources, CINHAL is great, so it is medline or CDC sites. In your textbook look for cases similar to your topic. You may use some cases from your clincal rotation applicable to the topic. Make the correlation with your (EBP) research and you can write your paper. I have received help from allnurses, and I would like to contribute a little bit. I hope it helps.

What is a PICOT Question?

The PICOT question format is a consistent "formula" for developing answerable, researchable questions. Writing these questions is deceptively simple! When you write a good one though it makes the rest of the process of finding and evaluating evidence much more straightforward.

P: Population/disease ( i.e. age, gender, ethnicity, with a certain disorder)

I: Intervention or Variable of Interest (exposure to a disease, risk behavior, prognostic factor)

C: Comparison: (could be a placebo or "business as usual" as in no disease, absence of risk factor, Prognostic factor B )

O: Outcome: (risk of disease, accuracy of a diagnosis, rate of occurrence of adverse outcome)

T: Time: The time it takes to demonstrate an outcome (e.g. the time it takes for the intervention to achieve an outcome or how long participants are observed).

You need to develop a question that will be answered

For etiology:

So you need to narrow your topic.
