No H2O to patients with NG tube??

    Hi all!

    I hope you are having a nice weekend!

    I read this in my med-surg book, at least I *think* I did... and I don't have it on me right now or I would check it but... is it true that you don't allow patients with a NG tube to drink water because it will cause a diffusion of electrolytes into the stomach that will then be suctioned away?? Can someone elaborate as well? thank you in advance!!!

    If your patient is able to drink water on their own, why do they have an NG tube?

    [edit] Furthermore, if you're pumping the patient's stomach why would they be ingesting any liquids?
