Lidocaine uses??

Hey guys,

I have an ICU paper revision due on Tuesday, however I'm getting stuck on the purpose of lidocaine for my patient. He had an order for lidocaine 2% 75mg bolus IV. Since he is intubated, I thought the purpose would be to control ICP rises during ET tube suctioning, but my instructor said this was incorrect. What would this medication be given for? My mind is blank at this point..

The patient presented with a CVA and rhabdomylosis, which led to him being placed in the ICU and intubated.

Thanks!!

Thank you Kimberlina, I had a feeling it would have been phased out by now. I had worked on Cardiovascular-Thoracics (LPN) at a teaching hospital in 1979 to 1985, and for a person who had unretractible PVCs, like salvos and tended toward V-tach., they would use Lidocaine drip. The trouble was, it had major side effects and toxicity, and at times, when they tried to wean it off and begin an oral med., the PVCs would start all over again. This kind of problem occurred with my own mother when she was having her cardiac problems.

We actually used to start Lidocaine drips on all MI patients to "numb "the heart/decrease irritation as it was irritated from the MI. Funny how things change....LOL
