Help with Case Study?

Nursing Students Student Assist

Specializes in ICU.

OK. I need help from any previous Nursing students.

We were told to look at a Case Study and determine from the five variables (Physiological, Psychological, Developmental, Sociocultural, and Spiritual) the assessment and stressors for each one pertaining to the case study. I beleived this would be easy considering we went thru other case studies in class and I got them right when the teacher reviewed them in class. So now I have an assignment for friday on a case study a bit more complex and longer than the ones in class. My question is.... for example. It states that her husband was emotianally distant and abusive at times. I considered this a stressor and not an assessment, but the catch is... I believe that information is a stressor both physiological and psychological. under which one will i put it??

Also.... I have trouble determining if something is either a stressor or an assessment?

Thanks,

Frankie

Looks like your nursing program is based on Neuman's Systems Theory. As I understand it "To determine the nautre of the stressors affecting clients, the nurse carries out a 'holistic assessmen'. The client system is assessed from five perspectives: physiological, psychological, developmental, sociocultural, and spiritual." (Neuman, B. (1995) the Neuman Systems Model, 3rd edition).

This means that you identify stressors from your client assessment. So, your example can be both and assessment and a stressor. That being said, your nursing instructor may have their own take on Neuman and has adapted the Neuman concepts to fit their interpretation of the theory.

Perhaps you should look at assessment as being data that is obtained directly from the client and a stressor is the interpretation of the assessment data. The assessment would be the client's specific statement and the stressor would be:

Psychological Stressor, interpersonal "lack of suport from husband."

Sociocultural Stressor, interpersonal, "unsupportive, sometimes abusive husband."

FYI, the above information is from the case study for "Debbie Stressors", the client in the case study you are referring to. (table 11-2 in the textbook)
