I desperately need help solving this 7 part problem. I have the first six answers, but need help with the last part.

I have an order to give Penicillin G 1,000,000 units IVPB every 8 hours. I have on hand 5,000,000 units per vial which needs to be reconstituted.

1. What solution should be used to disolve the powdered medication?

A: The drug book says to use sterile water, D5W or NS

2. How much diluent should be added to the vial?

A: The drug label says to add 23ml, 18ml, 8ml, or 3ml diluent to provide 200,000 u, 250,000 u, 500,000 u or 1,000,000 per ml respectively. Since I need 1,000,000 u I need to add 3ml diluent.

3. What is the concentration of the prepared solution?

A: 1,000,000 per ml

4. How many ml should you draw from the vial to get the correct dose?

A: I would draw up 1ml

5. How should the med be further diluted?

A: The drug book says doses of 3 million units or less should be diluted in at least 50 mL of D5W or 0.9% NaCl. So I would dilute with 50ml

6. What is the duration of time over which the med should infuse?

A: The drug book says to infuse over 1-2 hr in adults

Now here is where I have the problem.

7. What is the rate on your pump in ml/hr?

I want to say it's 50ml/hr if you choose to infuse over 1 hr. Or it could 25ml per hour if you choose to infuse over 2 hrs.

I'm just not sure. Class was a big confusing mess when this was being taught with everything shouting out multiple answers for different parts of the question all at the same time. Not the best learning environment. I'd appreciate any help with this. Thanks.

Does the problem ever specify how long it should be administered? If not then the answer would be... 50ml/hr if you choose to infuse over 1 hr. Or it could 25ml per hour if you choose to infuse over 2 hrs.

The order does not specify time to be infused. I think that is what is throwing me off. This is the first time I've had math problems that don't provide time to be infused.
