create a therapeutic toy

I am an LVN working on my RN. I am needing to create a therapeutic toy??? Any idea where I should start? I am thinking of doing it on a school aged child between 6-12. We have to make up that the child is sick or just had surgery.

If you google "therapeutic toy" you'll find a whole bunch of ideas!

Where to start?

Brainstorm...

Make a list of conditions...

Make a list of symptoms and responses to those conditions...

Make a list of kinds of toys and games...

Start mixing and matching...

You could also start out by picking a goal... education or comfort or distraction

Have fun with this.

Something I thought was very useful was a homemade "snake". It was rolled up polyester fiber fill covered with fabric and decorated with felt (for safety and ability to wash). Was great to bunch up and hug to cough or put under extremities or just about anywhere as support. A handy Sharpie allowed people to autograph it.

Puppets are always fun and kids can express their feelings through a character too!
