Buffer Systems in the Body

Hello all,

Would any of you mind explaining to me the following buffer systems in the body? I am having trouble grasping the concept of each.

-phosphate buffer system

-protein buffer system

-ammonia buffer system

-hemoglobin-oxyhemoglobin buffer system

My class notes do not make sense, and my textbook does not go into detail with any of them. In addition, I cannot find great sources online. I would like to be able to understand how these buffer systems regulate pH.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you understand the fundamental chemistry of buffers?

If not, go back to your chemistry book and make sure you understand HOW buffers, ummm, buff.

All buffers work the same way... a weak acid or weak base dissociates or associates a hydrogen ion thereby modifying the pH of the solution.
