Marian University online nursing - don't go there

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

I graduated from Marian University's online program, but I would never go there again or tell someone else to. This is just my opinion but ask other students. I'm sure another student or Marian person will write the opposite. But probably Marian or Orbis asked them. So make sure you talk to other people who went there.

It's not really Marian, it sort of is. The people at the online building don't work for Marian, they work for a company called Orbis Education. The company is on the same floor even as the online school. All Marian and Orbis care about is money, they didn't care about us at all. Good people used to work there, but they all left because they couldn't stand working there. The only good people left are all looking for new jobs.

Marian nursing professors don't want or like the online nursing students. They only wanted our money to build a building not for the online students. I heard the nursing teachers at Marian didn't want to do the online program, but the school made them.

Marian treated us like second class citizens. They don't like that we already have a degree and are older, because we know when they are not doing a good job. Which is most of the time. Somehow it was our fault that they do a terrible job teaching. I guess they can push around their regular nursing students because they don't know any better.

So many of my class left or were kicked out, because the program is so bad. They made us take tests on material we didn't know about, and then the dean told us as a group that it was our fault we did bad. This stuff happened every day. I was a 3.8 student at IU and my mom is a college teacher. I made 4.0 on my science prereqs at IUPUI. I was lucky to graduate.

It's too expensive for what you get. It cost me more than $55,000 to get my nursing degree from Marian, and I already had a degree. IU costs half that. I went to Marian thinking I would get a better nursing education. I was wrong. Also it's not 16 months. It's more like 24 months. They just say that so you will talk to them.

I love nursing. Wish I went to another nursing school. In Indianapolis don't go to Marian, go somewhere else.

Did you end up getting a Job at St. Vincent Hospital?

Having been an online student, I ma getting the strong impression that, unless the school is online-only, or has had an online program for well over a decade, it may be the the professors have been forced to teach in the programs online. Those bring in massive money, but t is clear that some of those instructors have a very negative attitude toward the online students; maybe they buy into the idea that they are lazy, unmotivated, have low standards, whatever. Likely there are fewer instructors per student, too, so they are glad to see some drop out. All in all, the online student loses. I for one will now only choose one in my area, and which has had an online program for a lonnnnggggg time, or only online programs!

Your post is actually quite the opposite of my experience. I'm sure things have changed since you were a student and the program has grown, but I feel that the Marian professors treat us just like they do the 4 year nursing students. Perhaps so many in your class were kicked out because they did not study?? Or they did not make school a priority? This is an accelerated program. Yes, it's tough. Yes, it's a lot of work. But, at the end of the day, it is only 16 months. I am not fresh out of college like many in my cohort. I am a wife and a mother, and I study when I can during naps and late at night. I've had conflicts with exam times and childcare, and the staff has been more than accommodating. This includes the Marian professors as well. They know that we are second degree students and that a lot of us have families. Please message me if you have any questions regarding this program!

IndyRN2016 I have a few questions! 1. I see that you have a family while going through the program. Do you work at all? I was debating on trying to get a student nursing job. 2. Was it really hard to get into the program? I have a little under a 2.8 because I'm terrible at Physics. My advisor acted like if I had some good grades on the prereqs I have left to take that it shouldn't be too much of an issue. I just wasn't sure if they turn students away because they didn't have exactly a 2.8 GPA. 3. Did you think it was overly challenging or doable? I used to work 2 jobs and was going full time in a Health Science degree so I think I could get through the program as long as I cut my work hours in half. Just trying to get a feel for what I could be getting myself into!

I would love to speak with you as I am considering going to Marian's ABSN online program and would love to hear what you have to say. Could you please contact me at:

Hi, would you be able to tell me some of the problems you had? I may end up going to Marian and I want to make sure that I am making the right choice.

Hello,

I’m interested in attending the Marian University Accelerated program. Can someone give me some updated advice in regards to the program please.

Hi,

im currently awaiting for a decision. I sent an appeal letter and I hope to get in.

I graduated with a 2.85 GPA with a degree in Healthcare Administration. I want to try out again because I know nursing is what I really want to do.
can you please email me @ [email protected]

or [email protected]

thanks.

I'm a current student in Marian's ABSN program. Although I don't agree we still have the same problems that the OP shared, Marian still has its problems. On the administrative side, Marian is very disorganized. The start of every semester feels frantic and even several semesters in you feel like you have no idea what is going on. This all, I'm sure, has been made even worse due to the ongoing pandemic. Overall I would say this programs number one flaw is that it's disorganized. I don't think the program administrators have really considered what the student perspective is.

Academically I think they do and average or above average job. I do feel like the professors care about us and our wellbeing and they are encouraging. It can feel a bit impersonal at times with everything being online but that's what we signed up for. Most of the professors seem very knowledgable in their respective fields and enjoy teaching. I had one major exception to this, but myself and my classmates still made it through.

Overall, I don't know if I would recommend Marian, I would say that depends on you. If you are looking for a program that is well put together and feels seamless, I would not recommend this program for you. However, if you are good with organization and prioritization (unlike me), you may do very well. I am overall a bit disappointed due to the price we pay compared to the amount of disorganization. I guess you would hope for a program that costs double what other nearby programs cost, you would expect them to have their stuff together a little better.

Hope this helps!

Is anyone currently attending this program? I’m talking to the Oklahoma City location but after reading these reviews I’m kind of second guessing my choice…….
