Deaconess Clinicals

Nursing Students Online Learning

Hi,

First I'd like to say that I love this forum. I have gotten so much good info here, that I couldn't find anywhere else.

So thanks everyone.

I have a few specific questions, and I would be so appreciative if anyone could help me out w/ these.

I first, was wondering how one would go about setting up thier own clinicals.

Secondly, does anyone happen to know when the application deadline for Fall 06 for Deaconess is?

Thanks again

TAra

Hi, I also want to know how clinicals work as well. Can anyone help us?

:lol2:

tlgreer,

I would also like to know the answer to your question by someone who has personal knowledge about deaconess.edu, I am interested in the program myself. From what I have read from previous post is that you have to setup your own clinicals with a preceptor at a local hospital in your city. How you go about doing that I couldn't tell you. I also would like to know have local hospitals been accepting of allowing you to do clinicals for their hospital for this non-traditional program??? Anyone if you can shed some light on this program we would really appreciate it thanks so much.

If attend Deaconess now--if you are a local student we have clinicals as a group. And if you are a distant learner you set up your own clinicals. I have know several students who have done this. They call the local hospitals and find out if someone is willing to be a preceptor, or if you have a friend who is a nurse you go to work with her while learning different skills. At the end of your clinical rotation you come to STL to show the instructors what you have lerned. Before clinicals the school provides you with a list of skills that need to be learned suring your rotation.

I hope this information helps.

OK so you find a nurse and set something up on your own for clinicals, and then after each rotation you must fly out to Missouri to show the instructors there that you have the skills? So how often is that?? And what is/was the application deadline for Fall '06?

Homeoflove4him,

I got a info packet from deaconess.edu yesterday, it basically stated what we already know. You have to set up your own clinicals and that they are full for Jan. 06 enrollment. It also said to get in contact with admissions in late February because they dont have a start date for the next class enrollment. I am just wandering of those who are in the program or who have been in the program how hard was it to set up your own clinicals with the local hospital? It doesnt say either if this is an expected 2 year program, I would think so because it is an ADN program but I want to know how long is it taking people to graduate?

I graduated from DCN last July. I was fortunate that I was working at a hospital and was able to do my clinicals there. It can be difficult to find a clinical site because there are many people who don't understand this program, or how it can possibly produce nurses!

I have been accepted to DCN for October 2006 and want to confirm a clinical site as early as possible so I don't have to worry about it later.

I am confused, though, because although I am aware it is my responsibility to arrange the clinical site, the packet I received clearly states "the Clinical Liaison will make the initial contact with the site".

So what I need to do is send contact information about eligible hospitals in my area to the Clinical Liaison and she will then phone them to see if they are willing to allow me to do clinicals there - is that correct?

Any help from those who have done this already would be wonderful.

Thanks!

JenEMTP,

Congrats on your acceptance into Deaconess School of Nursing!! My understanding of how it works is that you as the student have to make initial contact with the local hospitals and find a hospital that is willing to be a preceptor. They have to agree to allow you to fulfill your clinical requirements at their hospital and they will have to pair you with a nurse to get all your clinicals done. After you have found a hospital that agrees to be a preceptor, you will contact the appropiate people at Deaconess. They will need to know the details of who they need to contact in order to confirm with the hospital that they have agreed to be a preceptor and will allow you to fulfill your clinical requirements at the hospital. Deaconess will send the paperwork to the appropiate people at the hospital including their expectations, policies, clinical requirements and probably issues concerning liability etc. But you as the student make the initial contact to the local hospitals and find your own clinical site. Once you have a hospital lined up then Deaconess will send the paperwork for the hospital officials to sign. I hope this answers your questions and good luck and much success with the program.

I wanted to let you know that you may go through the tuition assistants office at the local hospital of your choice & ask them how you go about doing the clinicals. My local hospital says that Deaconess will have to do a contract with them. You can call the hospital you plan on doing clinicals at & ask either for someone in the Human Resource Dept. or ask for the tuition assistants office & they will be able to tell you what to do or who you should talk to. I wish you good luck in your profession in nursing. Thanks, Carolyn

Congrats on being accepted. I am a DCN grad (LPN, finished first year of program then transferred)

Is it possible that the quote "the Clinical Liaison will make the initial contact with the site" is referring to students who will do clinicals in the St Louis area. I recall that those who are planning to do clinicals in St Louis were not allowed to contact the hospitals, but that DCN would make arrangments for them. All the out of towners were responsible for making contact with hospitals.

Here is a link to an old post I wrote on how to approach hospitals for clinical support...

How to Get Clinical Support for DCN Clinicals
