Getting a MO RN License with a Misdemeanor Record

Nurses Criminal

Published

Hey All,

I was hoping to gain some "words of wisdom" in regards to the process for applying to take the NCLEX and getting licensed in Missouri. I am a current Nursing student who is set to graduate in December. I do have a criminal history (2 DUIs), and know that it will be an extremely nerve-wracking and painful process the next couple of months while trying to get the BON to approve of me as a suitable nurse. I received my first DUI in early 2012, didn't learn from my complete foolishness, and received the other one in August of 2012. The first one was reduced to a SIS, but I do realize that I will still need to report it. I have completed all the requirements by the law to deal with the misdemeanors (fees, classes, completed probation), and have done well in nursing school. I no longer drink and am completely remorseful for the mistakes that I have made to the point where not a day goes by that I don't ponder about how badly I have messed up. I was hoping to get some knowledge from people who have had similar situations or know the process that I will need to go through in Missouri to get licensed. I was hoping someone could give some good advice of what to include in my letter explaining what I did, how I have rehabbed, and why I should be allowed to continue my dream of being a nurse. I was also wondering if it is a requirement that I include "Letters of Recommendation" from professionals that I have interacted with regarding my character and recovery from my past. Obviously, I would rather not disclose my history to the professionals I am close too, but am willing too if need be. Again, I feel like a complete idiot for my past mistakes and have truly changed as a person. I would really appreciate it if people would refrain from judging my past mistakes and give some honest advice. I have wanted to become a nurse for 5 years now and feel that I am so close, yet so far. It is truly an amazing profession with some of the most compassionate people in the world. Thanks again for the help. It really does mean so much too me.
