DUI.... Any chance at being a RN?

Nurses Criminal

Published

Let me clear the air before I get lectured on, this is NOT me, this is for a friend of mine.

So my friend goes out and has a drink, she ends up getting a DUI, but I realized she wanted to be a nurse, does anyone know if the DUI will conflict with her future? I know most jobs perform background checks but does that count?

bad things do happen to good people. however, people choose to drink and then drive, it's not something that happens to them.

wannabe an rn, i am not trying to argue the morality of drinking and driving. i completely understand the seriousness of dui and like a lot of people i have mourned over loved ones loss as a consequence of drinking and driving. however, to deny someone the right to become an rn because they have made a mistake in the past like a first offense dui or omvi just seems ridiculous. i'm not a lawyer, nor am i on the state nursing board but i do know that in my state a first offense omvi in most cases is a misdemeanor, and so is jaywalking... i think each case should be looked at individually and there should not be a "blanket" cut and dry rule that is an automatic disqualification. if people say that they do not want to be a part of an institution that would accept an individual that may have been convicted of a dui/omvi misdemeanor, then so be it, go somewhere else that's their choice, but i'll bet you would be surprised at the amount of lpn's, rn's, dr.'s out there that would disagree and when you do become an rn, i would keep that opinion to myself because you never know whom you may offend. i understand that a dui doesn't happen "to" someone, but having their career dreams ripped out from under them does. i respect your opinion, but i just disagree that's all.
