Nursing Theory

  1. The semester is coming to an end! No more theory!

It is amazing how much more you learn as you continue in school. My first two years I focused on technical skills, and now that I am taking the upper level classes, the theories behind them are making sense, the whole picture is coming into better view. For instance, Jean Watson's caring theory and the points she brings about-things like taking more time to listen than just to go in and perform tasks. This really can help solve problems, by just listening. Another theory by Hildegard Peplau states the phases of the nurse-patient relationship. These are the orientation phase, the working phase, and the termination phase. Since studying this theorist, I have noticed that these phases have happened with each patient I have come into contact. It seems that these theories are obvious things that someone really smart just put into words to make sense.

I hope you continue to have such an open mind concerning nursing theorists. And continue to incorporate it into your nursing practice and interaction with patients. And I hope you do not get weighed down by the old story, that nursing theory has not place or impact on one's professionallife, unless it is EBP.

And I am aware of Peplau's theory. And find strength in some of her thoughts.
