My hospital is doing a point system: 0.5 for 4 hours, 1.0 for 8 hours, 1.5 for 12 hours of unscheduled work for full-time and part-time employees. For every 8 points earned, RNs get $500, LPNs get $300. The holes in the schedule are still wide open because some people got to 6 or 7 points and got nothing when the incentive program ended last year. Go for the immediate reward system if you want results.
My hospital had an incentive plan in place for about a year with great results--1.5x +$10/hr. for all O.T. in excess of four hours on any given day. It was a great retention tool and helped significantly during a period of really poor staffing. We were able to reduce agency usage by over 50% by implementing this program. Since then, we have raised inhouse registry rates to $35/hr. + shift and weekend diffs., so we've been able to recruit a large number of nurses into the inhouse registry as well. Overall, both programs helped provide some continuity, and we now utilize agency very sporadically.
