Director position interview

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I have a meeting with my chief nursing officer about applying to a director of nursing for my unit (family birth center) how should I prepare? What should I bring? My peers tell me a snap shot of my experience but not a resume... I have never heard of such a thing...

A resume is never a bad thing. Now is not the time to experiment with something new that might backfire.

Dress appropriately for an interview at that level.

Anticipate questions likely to be asked:

1. Unit strengths and weaknesses

2. How you would address weaknesses and/or anticipated problems

3. Be prepared to discuss how your relationships with your current colleagues would change.

4. Previous experiences that have prepared you for the position.

5. Be prepared to interview with the Medical Director, other department directors, staff, etc.

etc. Hopefully, others will chime in with more issues/possible questions to prepare for.

Do whatever you can to research the role -- what will the responsibilities include? etc.

Make a list of questions for YOU to ask, such as orientation to the role, support available, expectations, etc.

That's a start.
