Nursing Informatics reports to the VP of Nursing. There is a change afoot to change this and have them report to the CMIO. Who do you report to and are there advantages to this reporting structure.

We do not have a seperate dept of "Nursing Informatics". Instead the reporting and dept structure at our organization flows as such:

The department of Information Systems is composed of 1) Financial and Administrative Applications, 2) Networking, LAN, WAN 3) Data Operations/User Support and 3) Clinical Informatics.

All the above report to our CIO (Chief Information Officer) who in turn reports to the CFO (Chief Financial Officer).

Nursing (inpatient and out patient) reports to the VP of Nursing. the VP of Medical Practice, the VP of Nursing, the CFO and the CIO are on the Executive Committee and report to the Board of Directors.

As the Project Manager, Clinical Information Systems I report directly to the CIO and am the clinical liason between IS and all clinical depts within the hospital including: Lab, Radiology, Dietary, Rehab, Pharmacy, Medical Staff, Nursing and Social Services. Reporting to IS and the CIO is ideal in my opininion as I actually work for and report to the actual department where the decisions are made. Nursing may "want" a new triage system, Pharmacy may "think" a stand alone system will work and or Medical Practice might "have to have" a credentialing app...... but all acquisitions (software, networking and hardware) have to be evaluated and approved by IS first.
