ACTION REQUESTED: Response to HITSP Requirements, Design and Standards Selection due 07/22/2008

Greetings Nursing Informatics Community,

You feedback is needed from the nursing perspective! The Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) HITSP has announced the opening of a four week comment period for six Requirements, Design and Standards Selection (RDSS) documents. Once reviewed, these documents will form the basis of the panel's set of Interoperability Specifications to be delivered to the American Health Information Community (AHIC) later this year.

What is HITSP?

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has as its mission the implementation of President Bush’s vision for widespread adoption of interoperable electronic health records (EHRs) by 2014. In the fall of 2005, ONC awarded multiple contracts to advance this goal. Among these were contracts for creating processes to harmonize standards, certify EHR applications, develop nationwide health information network prototypes and recommend necessary changes to standardize diverse security and privacy policies. ANSI, in cooperation with strategic partners HIMSS, Booz Allen Hamilton and Advanced Technology Institute, was awarded this contract to advance this goal. This standards harmonization collaborative established the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP). The Panel’s work is driven by a series of priorities (i.e., Use Cases) issued by the American Health Information Community (AHIC). HITSP produces recommendations and reports in Interoperability Specifications and related Constructs. These work products are intended to be equally applicable to the developing Nationwide Health Information Network for the United States (NHIN) and also to community and regional health information exchange networks.

Why comment?

The RDSS documents define the requirements and design for the Interoperability Specifications and candidate standards for the AHIC-identified "Use Cases". Comments received will be used to inform the HITSP Technical Committee's ongoing process of standards selection and Interoperability Specification development in these areas.

What do you comment on?
