teaching use chlorhexadine for IVs

Remember how swabbing to clean for IV insertion was circles from the inside out? But now I am hearing that when we use chlorhexadine that you are just supposed to swab back and forth? Don't you pull bacteria over a clean area? Does anyone know where to find updated info on where/how to use the chlorhexadine?

I believe there is information on the CDC website. Chlorhexadine is most effective with friction-thus the back and forth motion needed.

i researched this for my practicum project last year,

chlorhexidine skin antisepsis has been proven to provide better skin antisepsis than betadine and other antiseptic agents. use back-and-forth friction scrub for 30 seconds and allow to dry completely. 80% of resident and transient skin flora are found in the first 5 epidermal layers of skin, and there is evidence to support the use of sufficient friction to reach into the cracks and fissures of the skin, while no evidence supports the use of the traditional concentric prepping (aacn, 2005).
