Question for Nursing Educators, particularly Community College Instructors

I'm just doing some preliminary research on the admission standards for incoming nursing students...

For example, does your CC have open admissions where everyone is accepted if they meet minimum requirements with the use of waiting lists, lotteries, etc.

Are students required to have some health related background? for example, experience as a CNA...

How are your retention rates? Which students are more likely to drop out versus your successes?

For example, the community college that I have applied to requires that a student have a "C" average minimum. Talking with an A&P instructor, he has found that some students may make that minimum but when it comes to taking the nursing curriculum,they are just about blown out of the water.

Any input of your experiences are greatly appreciated...

I'm goin to CCAC and they just changed their program for those starting Fall 2006. We had to take a NET test and you HAD to score above a 60% in your math and reading. Then they looked at your a&p1 and a&p2 and micribiology grades. They gave out points for what you had, for example if you had at A you got 50 pts, b was 40 and c was 30 (i don't know if those are the correct point values but just to give an example). They gave out points for your GPA (which had to be over 3.0 to even apply).

They lined the applications up starting with the highest amount of points earned and they took the first 180, so no, not everyone gets in. They only take those with the higher micro and a&p scores because they feel they will make the better nurses then someone who failed all 3 classes which i feel is true also.

But, like you said, alot of students drop out, for instance out of the group they took last year of 200 students only 110 of them are still there. that's almost half of the students that have dropped out either because they flunked out (had an average grade of 75% or lower) or it was too much for them to handle and they dropped out.
