Nurse Educator Question of the Month: What is YOUR Favorite Med-Surg Textbook

We use the familiar Ignatavicius ("Iggy"): Medical-Surgical Nursing: Critical Thinking for Collaborative Care in our ADN curriculum. We are fairly satisfied, but some of the sections are a little skimpy on content, and there seems to be a lack of organization in areas. I like the integration of concept mapping into the nursing process.

So, educators, let us know what your favorite book is and why. :)

I'm just a student. We use Brunner & Studdarth's. I really like it. It's split into two volumes and it implements the nursing process into every topic. They usually spread it over the last few pages of a chapter and correlate the previous content that the student has read. There are also very good critical tinking exercises at the very end of the chapter. It has gerontologic considerations for the topic within the readings b/c the majority of the med-surg pop. is elderly. One of the other things I really like about it is the A&P review that they have before a topic. I don't remember everything I had in A&P so it's nice to have everyting all in one place. Just my .02.

Thanks for sharing! This sounds great, especially the critical thinking exercises. One of my fellow instructors at the school swears by this textbook, but I have never seen a copy. Will have to get a complimentary copy from the book rep to review. Who knows, we may like this better than "Iggy."

Glad to help. It was optional to buy the book for our first semester and required for our second and subsequent semesters. When I got to my second last January I was kicking myself for not forking over the money. It's definitely worth it and I could have used it during the first semester.

I also use Brunner and Suddharth's textbook and I love it :)

We also use Brunner and Suddharth's textbook in our school. It is a good book. BUT, it has a lot of mistakes and contradictory information.

Salmi....

Not an educator either - but my BSN program uses Lewis, and I'm happy with it so far. :)
