working in a Physical Therapy office as an RN?

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi. I am a new nursing student and I'm exploring different specialty/career paths. Does anyone know if it is possible to work in a Physical Therapy office as an RN, or would it be possible to assist a PT as an RN?

Also, can an RN find work with a chiropractor or with an OT?

I don't think a PT office would have the need for the skills of an RN. PTs have PT aides that assist them. Same situation for OT. I have heard of chiropractors or other alternative practititoners hiring RNs for nutritional IV therapy, but this would depend on the laws of the state in which you reside. These jobs would be very, very few and far between, so I would not base your career on an opportunity like that. If the other fields interest you, why don't you look into them before you get too far into nursing?

PTs have PTAs (physical therapy assistants) and PT aides that can work along with them. I'm a PTA for 7 years and just finished nursing school. If you really like PT, then I recommend that you get a degree in the field. To become a physical therapy assistant you need an associate degree and pass the licensing national exam, just like an RN needs to pass the NCLEX. The salary of a PTA in New York starts at around 45k but if you work per-diem, the average salary is $35/hour. If you really prefer it to nursing, go for it.
