I AM CURRENTLY A L&D NURSE FOR ABOUT 1 1/2 YR AND MED-SURG FOR 2 YRS. MY HEART IS IN THE NICU AND I AM REALLY READY TO START MY CAREER IN THE NICU. BUT I AM HAVING A HARD TIME BEING ABLE TO FIND A JOB WHERE I CAN GET INTO THE NICU WITHOUT THE EXPERIENCE IN THAT FIELD OF CARE. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS TO HOW I CAN GO ABOUT WORKING IN THE NICU AND BECOME A NICU RN? I WANT TO START WORKING TOWARDS MY MASTERS AS A NNP BUT I CAN'T UNTIL I GAIN THE EXPERIENCE. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Do you have a nicu where you currently work? If so ask your manager if you can crosstrain to nicu. State that you have an interest and would like to be able to expand your expertise. If your hospital doesn't have a nicu, consider changing to a LD unit in a hospital that does, with the stipulation that you will crosstrain to nicu. I've gotten the majority of my skills starting off in one job and being open to crosstraining/floating to another unit.

good luck!
