Should I detour or stay on course.

Nurses Career Support

Published

I'm a 36yr old mom of four. I decided in 2012 to pursue a career in the Medical field. I'm a CCMA and started taking some Core classes this summer for my BSN. Although I have a certification for MA it's hard to get employed here in Tx. W/o experience . I've been accepted in the LVN Program but my question is...Should I continue on taking my core classes for my BSN. Or Will going through the LVN Program help me once I transfer to complete my BSN ?

Only you can answer your question - because we have no idea of your own unique personal circumstances.

If you want to do a 'step-wise' progression rather than focus on your BSN right away, make sure that your LVN program is a "college hour" accredited program rather than a "clock hour" program that is just approved by the state (not accredited). This is a very important distinction. Non-nursing courses that you take in a "college hour" program will transfer - but nothing from a clock hour program transfers.. you will basically have to start from scratch.

If you're in a metro area, take the time to investigate the academic partnerships in your area. These are designed for folks such as yourself who want to start with an LVN or ADN and move on to complete a BSN later on. Pre-existing agreements between the schools will help you transition to the nest "step" without having to re-take a bunch of classes.

Yes, the college that I attend (Kilgore College)is accredited. They offer a bridge program to continue my studies at our local University (UT Tyler). My counselor and I made sure that all my classes will transfer. This is the best route for me. Working while I acquire my BSN is mandatory; for the sake of my children. Finishing the LVN program in a yr will allow me to work in the field, while gaining experience, and continue working towards my BSN. Thanks for responding.

Thanks, HouTx for the hints. I'm in South Texas, and jobs are hard to find in some areas (EMT-B, CNA). Thinking of LVN school also. Good luck to you, ChanP78!

Thanks, Squad51KMG365. Good luck to you !
