Nurses Career Support

Hi, I'm 39, married, 2 small children. I have a BS in another field but I'm leaving my old career behind to become a nurse. I have started taking classes that will be required for the local com col's LPN program. (I thought long and hard about the LPN vs. RN programs, and my husband and I both agree that our household cannot survive financially if I take that long of an absence from contributing a full-time salary. And yes, I need to rule out the Acc. BSN for now.) I will not know if I am accepted or not until March. Because of the competition out there, I am very afraid that although I plan to do what it takes to become an outstanding candidate, I would not be accepted to the program. So far, I have an A in my summer class, and I'm in the process of seeking a CNA training program at a local hospital. What more can I do to stand out during selection time? I hear about so many people getting turned down... what sort of qualities in those canidates get them turned down? Are they lacking in experience, maturity, prerequisites? Or is it just luck of the draw sometimes? Thanks for any answers!

Hi Sue,

I think the route you are taking to achieve your nursing degree if fine if it works for you financially. The best advice I can give is for you to maintain your high marks for the additional prereqs for the RN program you enter.

While in the CNA program try and get the opportunity to learn as many advanced level skills as you can from your instructor(s). This will give you a little bit of an edge on your resume and during your interviews.

Much Success!
