Public health - trying to break in!?

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi there, I'm seeking a little advice and some opinions (mainly) from public health nurses. In September I will have my first year of RN practice under my belt, in a busy cardiothroacic and vascular surgical unit. I've known for years (formerly a PCT) that the hospital isn't for me. My dream job is health disparity research and application within the community, with an MPH.

An opportunity has (possibly) come up to work as a pediatric home health nurse OR adult hospice, I applied on a whim and have been called back for the next round by both. However within the next 2 to 3 years I will be moving for hubby's job and am hoping to transition to a federally funded clinic or health department at that time. So, question is, would future employers look more favorably on sticking it out with my current unit or going ahead and getting community health experience for a year or two?

I'm afraid of being a "job-hopper" and damaging my future because of it, but the stress, scheduling, and management in my current situation have me completely miserable.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
