Specializes in Paediatrics - Neuroscience/Cardiac.

Im seriously thinking about doing a post grad diploma in paediatric nursing practice next year! appictions open in a coulpe of days.

Would anyone recommend further education?

Pretty much.. it "might" look good for one day in the next 5 - 10 years when i go for a management job in a paediatric ward at a costal hospital and live my life surfing and drinking beer.

But thats about it.. i might become a clinical nurse specialist quicker or a charge nurse.

but you can do these things without dishing out 12grand that you don't have.. so im just wondering.

anyone else's thoughts?

Well, I'm doing post grad study now, after having only been an RN for 8 months. I would go for it, but if you are only doing it to look good later, you need to think long and hard about it. I enjoy studying and want to learn as much as I possibly can. You might not.

As far as the fees, you can get FEE-HELP. The University of Newcastle offers post-grad studies online, so you never have to go to class, and you can do it in your own time. A masters in Advanced Practice will set you back 8 grand, or you can exit after 40 units with a Grad Cert. Or the College of Nursing will cost you three grand-ish for a graduate diploma... 12 is an overestimate in my experience.

Um, I don't work for the uni either!

Good luck in whatever you choose. I think education is never a waste.

I probabaly sounded like a bit of a lazy aussie in that post, but i do enjoy studying and learning.. and i want to learn as much as i can. however i do this everyday. i dont need a bit of paper at the end of the year to say that ive been learning things. its the formal education thats going to get me somewhere and so yeh.. i guess i am doing it to look good.

the material presented to me would be easy enough to grasp from a badly written text book, however i can't put that on my CV - that i read alot. So i need the qualifications.

It costs $12200 at melbourne uni. my work place will pay a third, apparently. and there is a $2000 scholarship on offer from an auxilliary of the hosptial. so if things go well.. it could cost $6200.

I'm pretty sure i will submit my application in the comming weeks. Ive done the math. Even if it doesnt get me no where and im just a nurse forever.. it will end up being useful in my worklife, make things easier.. and finacially it will pay itself off in 4 years and 3 months (on the current allowance for having a post grad diploma) or if i got theat scholarship.. 2 years.

bethem, what are you doing post grad qualifications in??
