Phone nursing as first job?

Nurses Career Support

Published

I'm a new grad and I have an opportunity to take a phone nursing position. I would much prefer a position with direct patient contact, but with the job market the way it is, I'm wondering if I should take this. I'm concerned that it's not going to be considered "real" experience in a year when I try to move into a hospital or other care position, though. Plus I don't think it will help me develop any of my skills, and I'll lose what little skills I have.

How would I be perceived if I work there for a year? Would it help me at all or would I be better off looking for a direct care position even if it takes 6 months?

Take it, and keep looking. Any experience is good for you. I don't think it will necessarily help you get a hospital position, just like home-health is totally different than acutes. It def won't hurt you though.

BTW, what company? Do they pay well? Do you have to work out of an office?

It's in an office and the pay is average for a first job.
