Okay, I have a problem.. Or so I think I have a problem.. Back in 2011 (still in nursing school) I applied for a position as a CNA for NSLIJ.. I had an interview at the corporate office or whatever in lake success.. During my interview, I disclosed (like an idiot) to the person interviewing me, that I had gotten in trouble for shoplifting in 2007.. (Note that the incident was taken off of my record after I attended a shop lifting class, so my background check has always been clean) anyway, I told the person interviewing me about it... And she asked me to give a detailed explanation of what happened.. So I did.. And she told me she had to write it all down, it would be confidential, no one else would see it, and after the interview it would be destroyed.

After I graduated in 2014 with my BSN, I applied to many different positions.. But nothing. I attributed it to the fact that I was a new nurse.. It is now 2016, and I recently applied to about 7 different RN positions (some today and some 3 days ago) figuring I have two years of nursing experience now.

My question is: did I completely screw myself by being honest during the interview back in 2011? Is it possible that my name has been "flagged" in their system?

I feel like I have no chance of ever getting a position with NSLIJ because of my honesty..

does anyone have any insight?

I don't think you would be flagged. And I definitely wouldn't disclose that information to anyone ever again! You only need to disclose misdemeanor or felonies that you were convicted of or plead guilty to. As long as you have none you're fine. It's more likely that you haven't heard because the job market here is VERY competitive! I'm proud to say that I just recently received a job offer from them :-) I'll be starting soon! I graduated with my Associates May 2014, BSN March 2015 and I've probably submitted over 100 applications to the NSLIJ system alone over the past 2 years (no exaggeration) not to mention every other hospital on Long Island, most in the city and some upstate. A recruiter reached out to me via email about 2 months ago and things finally started falling into place! [emoji120]🏽. Don't give up, try not to get discouraged!

Where are you currently working? What type of experience do you have? Do some research on how to improve your resume & online application. Most of these places use filtering systems so you're application might not even be seen.

Good luck to you!

I currently work in a nursing home. As a RN manager... Which is by far the most stressful position I've ever had. 5 days a week 7-3shift, I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Thank you so much for your words of encouragement. I really appreciate it.

I doubt if any interview notes from that long ago would factor in at this point. More likely it is a very competitive market and for whatever reason you haven't been called for an interview yet. You say that you recently applied for some positions so you may well be called for an interview at some point. It's not unusual for the process to take quite some time.

So take a deep breath and remember when you do inevitably get an interview whether it is there or somewhere else that there is such a thing as too much honesty. No need to disclose your past especially since you say you now have a couple years experience so that must mean you passed the background check that your employer would have run. Unless you work for an employer that never ran a background check, in that case I would pay to run one on yourself just to make sure the old charge doesn't still show up.

I know for a fact 100% that the charge is completely off of my record. I don't think t was ever even on there because it was a first time offense. I've had man non Nursing Jobs and three nursing jobs since then. My problem was that I was just too honest. Which I know now to never mention the incident in a job interview again. I'm just worried that I ruined any future chances of getting employed by them.
