Need Some Career Advice!

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi, I'm a new member and thought I'd seek some advice from some already practicing nurses out there. I'm a recently licensed RN but I have been out of school for a year now. After I finished my program I decided to take my time to get my license first and to spend some time with my daughter (who I had during my last semester of school). I now want to get into the field and currently interviewing for new grad programs at a few hospitals. But I'm finding it more difficult to get the interviews since I have no previous medical background and have been out of school for a year. The other delema is that I'm again 3 months pregnant. I really want to get my career going and I fear that I may not get hired if I tell them I am pregnant. I also don't want to put off my career any longer, I feel the pressure to get at least a year under my belt. Any advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Keep applying....you dont have to tel anyone ur pregnant unless you are gonna work in oncology or something. I do hear its tough to get a job after a year if you didnt start asap after school.

First off look for a job that is not incredibly stressfull....because you sound like you will have quite a bit of that at home with 2 little ones. Personally I think hospital shifts are hard on moms with young kids, and you get so exhausted. I was out of school 5 months before I got a job. It was in a peds office. I think if you apply to office settings they will be more apt to hire you because you don't need as many skills compared with the hospital. And if you can afford it, go part-time! Your children are the most important thing.
