LVN through military AIT? Please HELP!

Nurses Career Support

Published

I heard that the military has training for medics which will give me an LVN/LPN license once completed. I talked to this guy at the recruitement center who completed his AIT and he said it was a nearly year long program.

If the above is true, I want to serve as a reservist, while working as an LVN/LPN at a military hospital and work on my LVN/LPN to RN. Once I get my RN I want to go to grad school as a nurse practioner.

Please HELP ME! I am having a really tough time getting information because the recruiter doesn't have good knowledge on medical programs the army offers.

nobody??? I need to find a nurse recruiter :(

The military job (MOS) you want is the 68WM6 which is a LPN/LVN. You will attend a 1 year AIT which includes classroom and clinical, then once you pass your LPN NCLEX state boards (any state) you will obtain the 68WM6 MOS.

The person you need to see for this option is your local Army recruiter, just make sure your enlistment contract states the MOS of 68WM6. The 68W MOS is the Combat Medic, 68WM6 is the LPN. So make sure you have the M6 identifier in your contract, if not you'll end up as a Medic.

And keep in mind, the military works just like the medical field: If it's not in writing, it didn't happen... So if the recruiter promises you something, tell him/her to put it in writing in your contract.

Good luck to you.

Thanks so much Jarnaes! This is such an important decision I can't thank you enough!

THis is my plan, complete M6 -> become an LPN

Join a reserves unit in Korea (my family is there)

Take an online LPN->RN course online while in the reserves.

ONE more question, when I take the LPN->RN online in Korea, will AMEDD do clinicals with me?

As far as permission to do your LPN-RN clinical at the military hospital, best bet would be to contact the individual hospital as every facility sets their own policies depending on mission and available staff. The hospital's education department would be my first point of contact.

Another issue may be your state's board of nursing and educational program, will they accept training obtained outside the US?

well, the training would be in a US military hospital so I don't think it would matter where I do it as long as it's in a US hospital even if its overseas?

GOSH its so damn hard to find a recruiter with extensive knowledge on the medical field. I wish there was someone to talk to.

Are you still in the military? I still have so many more questions, I posted some on military.com but didn't get a response yet. Do i need to enlist in Korea to be assigned to a reserve unit in Korea? one recruiter said so, but another said not.

I've been active duty for 19 years now, I do not know much about the Reserves and their rules.

As far as the training location, I would just verify with the school and BON that the location is approved and get it in writing. Sometimes there are tricky little technicalities that can mess things up, that's all.

Your local Army recruiter can get you enlisted for the 68WM6, but if they can't answer your medical field related questions, the guys at the healthcare recruiting command may be able to help you. Check out : http://www.goarmy.com/amedd/index.jsp

Good luck.

omg thank you jarnaes! One last question if you can answer, I promise :)

If I choose to get my LPN first and then enlist, what is my initial training going to be after BCT?? will it be 68W training which is only a few weeks or the whole 68WM6 which is almost a year?

THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU

As long as you have a valid nursing license, you should only need the 68W training. BUT a lot of this is determined by the needs of the Army. So, best best is to check with your local Army recruiter, they have all the current policies and guidelines. What they allowed 6 months ago may not be the current policy today.

If you do get your LPN/LVN license and then join the Army to attend 68W AIT, make sure your contract and orders state that your primary MOS will be 68WM6 upon completion of the 68W course. If not, the the Army will assign you and work you as a 68W, case closed.
