Lpn interested In becoming Rn

Nurses Career Support

Published

I am an Lpn interested in becoming an Rn. Problem is I don't have the time to go to a traditional college to take courses. (i work two jobs as an LPN). I am interested in online Rn courses or any info on Excelsior college in albany. Is it legitimite, how does it work? How does the clinicals work?

Any other schools that offer online Rn courses that is accepted by New York state???

Thanks for any info you can provide:)

Hi!!

Yes, the Excelsior program is legit. you can visit their web site at http://www.excelsior.edu and click on nursing to get info. The program grants credits for exams taken via excelsior, clep, & Dantes. All courses are based on end of course exams (one test covers the course UNLESS you take some generals at a CC). You can complete the general ed courses by taking the accepted exams or via a local community college. There are 7 required excelsior nursing courses taken at a prometric site. Once completed with the generals exams and nursing exams you are required to take a 2 1/2 day clinical weekend--this tests your skills according to set criteria. You will receive a big study guide to prepare...the college also offers workshops and web based courses to help prepare. This is the only clinical you have, but it must be done perfectly, as there is no teaching involved--just you demonstrating set areas of care.

There is another school that has on-line lpn to rn it is called Deaconess. I do not know much about it. I do know it requires some travel to Missouri for skill check off. You take your clinicals at a local site. Please go to the distance learning board where you will find tons of info on both programs.

Good luck,

Kim
