Have an MBA and wondering if I should pursue a BSN

Nurses Career Support

Published

My undergrad is in business administration and immediately after graduating I started my MBA and finished a year ago. I am currently working in healthcare administration and I am thinking about pursuing a degree in nursing. Will having a nursing degree help me in moving up within healthcare management?

No ... not unless you want to oversee the nursing division. Nursing leadership experience might help you move up, but you would have to actually practice nursing for a while before getting a position in Nursing Administration -- and it sounds like you don't really want to do that.

If you want to be a nurse, be a nurse. But if you don't -- then don't waste time getting a BSN. By itself, without nursing experience, it won't do much.

The degree might help you get a few jobs -- such as in medical sales -- but that doesn't sound like the "step up" that you are looking for.

Research the types of jobs that you are interested in and see what the preferred backgrounds are for those jobs. I doubt that you will find many that prefer a BSN with no actual work experience as a nurse.
