To get my foot in the medical door... CNA?

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello to all. I'm actually a beginning Respiratory Care student that switched from Computer Information Systems to a BS in RC after nearly three years in college. I currently work a midnight shift at an aluminum extrusions company and would like to get the heck out of there and into something medical and that could help me with my current journey of becoming a respiratory therapist. If I am right, I don't need a degree to beome a CNA correct? Just need to pass certification tests? Can I do this with self study? Or do I need to take actual classes? Finally, is this a good idea or am just shooting spit into the wind? Thanks for taking the time to read this post and BTW even though I'm not a nurse I love reading your guys' (and ladies :-) ) posts...Ha I check this website daily just to read

Hey id like to put my two cents in on this topic. I have a friend that challenged the cna test and she passed on the first try. She bought a book that is a study guide for the test and it has practice questions and topics that will be test on for your clinicals she said it was difficult but not too bad. So if i were you i would buy the study guide book and practice your clinicals and just challenge the test. I think it cost her a little over 100 dollars and then they sent her a list of places that the test would be held and lucky for her they had a test at the same community college that she attends now it was very convienient for her. She passed with flying colors. So if i were you i would challenge the test and go for it. It will save you alot of time and money. I hope this helped you a little

Sorry for the late reply...I know, tisk tisk on me for not checking the boards ;) ... anyways, I don't think I quite understand what you mean by "challenge". Are you saying that I may not have to take classes? Just selfstudy and take the test? I'm kinda confused by what you are saying. LanaBanana, that sure seems to be the case with everything in life anymore. Haven't been able to get ahold of him yet because of my schedule and his. I will try again tomorrow.

Yes that is exactly what im emplying that by challenging the test you dont take any classes you just take the test.

thanks for the advice lana, i will def try that!

Hi...All

I too wanted to get my foot in the door, as a CNA.......but hospitals locally are telling me that they are phasing those jobs out here in California. So please call around and make sure there will be a job for you too. Just my 2Cents worth. Best Wishes.

No sign of CNA's not having a spot in our mediacal system here in florida. We can always use CNA's especially in nursing homes around here. Maybe you should check your source that told you this imformation and make sure its accurate cause it sounds a little bogus. As far as i know CNA's will be around as long as their are RN's. Both profession arent going anywhere and are in demand. Hope this helped.

Yeah, it seems that it all is a matter of location when it comes to availability of jobs. I'm hearing that there may be voluntary lay-off sometime soon where I work. As bad as it first sounds, i'm hoping for a chance to take vol. layoff so I can have 3 months off while still getting unemployment and look at taking some CNA/NA classes and/or volunteer work (in addition to working on my BS in Respiratory Care at Youngstown State University)...hehe plus still keep my med benifits at work as long as I come back before 90 days are up. Would have to cut back on any extra spending but should still get enough from U.E. to get by with the bills.
