Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi,

I am trying to decide which direction I want to focus my education. I am curently an EMT2 in rural Alaska and have worked as a Medical assistant in a community health center for the past year. I truly love working with patients in both the emergent and non-emergent situations.

I have always dreamed of being an ER nurse like my aunt and am enrolled as a pre-nursing student in fall of 2003.

First question: Would you recommend a two year degree and entering the workforce right away or taking the time to go through a four year program? ( I have a 14 month old daughter)

At the clinic I work with a fantastic team of PA's who provide excellent primary care and are strongly encouraging me to pursue this avenue.

Question: If you could do it over would you go into nursing again or would you look in to other programs, like PA or MD?

Thank you for your input.

Heather

Take the 2 yr degree and start working. I have 2 bachelors and they do nothing to increase my pay rate. Nursing is great with tremendous variety although the work can be very hard. But there are lots of part-time and shift positions which is great when you have a family. Best of luck.
